How to Use LinkedIn Stories

When did LinkedIn stories become a thing?

LinkedIn stories officially launched in September 2020, just over four years after Instagram began offering the option of content that only lasts 24 hours.

Stories are fun, not overly-edited pieces of content that you can share with your audience for 24 hours. (On Instagram, you can also highlight them on your profile, so that they can be viewed later.) The story feature has become so popular that Facebook and LinkedIn have also followed suit. Even Twitter is attempting it.

How are businesses leveraging stories?

Stories are a great tool to show a behind-the-scenes look at a project or for business owners to share a glimpse of their personal life. For example, they could post a story of them with their dog or family or what they had for brunch. Stories offer a unique and popular way to connect with your audience.

How do LinkedIn stories differ from IG/FB stories?

The similarities of LinkedIn stories to Instagram and Facebook stories are that you can upload a story to the top of your feed that will remain visible for 24 hours and decorate it with stickers and text. As for the differences, LinkedIn does offer a unique feature like “question of the day." Music, filters, and many other add-ons that Facebook and Instagram stories have don't appear to be coming for LinkedIn.

LinkedIn stories are also only available on the mobile app.

What are the best practices for LinkedIn stories?

LinkedIn is thought of as the social platform where you keep things professional, not casual. The idea behind the stories on this platform is that you can share business-related accomplishments, goals, shoutouts to your team members, a photo of your office space, or other day-to-day activities in your work life.

“As stories are shared for 24 hours”, says Kiran Prasad, VP of Product at LinkedIn, “we see this great option for you to…express professional moments with your LinkedIn network without worrying about content that is permanently attached to your profile.”

While the reviews on LinkedIn stories are mixed, the Senior Director of LinkedIn Product, Liz Li explained she hopes it will encourage people who otherwise normally wouldn’t post to share content to LinkedIn via stories. She hopes that will give them the boost to start networking and jumpstarting the conversation. “Members in the past have found sharing on LinkedIn to be intimidating. We’re hoping [stories] will spark more conversations from people who just don’t really share content on LinkedIn.”
